KEY STAGE 4
Towards the end of year 9, all students select their subjects for the two-year course leading to the GCSE/IGCSE. There is no difference between the
academic worth of GCSE and IGCSE, but in some subjects, the curriculum of one or the other is preferred. Mathematics, English, Science and ICT
are compulsory.
Students choose their remaining subjects from the following list:

These two years often known in British schools as 'the sixth form' represent the final stage of secondary education. All students at VES complete their
GCSE/IGCSE examination at the end of year 11. Although in the past there were several universities in the Middle East region which would accept
students with GCSE's only, these are now very few and so higher qualifications are now required. Universities in Britain and the USA all require a post -
16 qualification such as A levels.
At VES we offer the range of AS (Advanced Subsidiary) and A (Advanced Level) courses. In year 12, students choose three or four 'AS' courses in their
best subjects and at the end of the year they complete the examinations. Students may complete their secondary education at AS level or continue
for year 13 to complete the A2 (full A level) which will normally be for three of the subjects followed in year 12.
British universities all require three A level passes. American universities normally grant remission of up to a full year of the four-year course for students
with three good A level passes.
The subjects offered at AS and A levels at VES cover the most popular courses, but the range of subjects will vary slightly from year according to student
demand.
