The school nurse's responsibilities include

Liaise
with parents to promote their children's physical health and social welfare. |
|
|
Encourage
open communication between the nurse and parents regarding their children. |
|
|
Each
child has a medical file which is updated to include any chronic illness such
as asthma, eczema and allergies. Also, acute illnesses such as flu virus,
throat infections or gastroenteritis are documented. |
|
|
Monitor contagious
diseases such as chicken pox, impetigo, nits and ringworm. |
|
|
Keep a record
of children's previous vaccinations and ensure that they adequately
protected. A yearly vaccination programme is in force that is run by the
Ministry of Health. The school doctor will administer D.T.; Polio; German
Measles; M.M.R.; and Hepatitis B vaccinations to those children that need it
with the parental permission. |
|
|
Any child
feeling unwell at school will come to the nurse for assessment. A sick child
can rest on the bed to await the arrival of a parent to take them home. The
nurse can give limited medication upon the parents directions. |
|
|
The nurse
can treat small 'playground' injuries. Serious injuries will be referred to
the family doctor. |
|
|
The nurse
can treat emergencies at school before transfer to hospital. |
|
|
The nurse
conducts a medical check up of each child during the school year. Height,
weight, vision and teeth are checked. |
|
|
The nurse
will assist the school doctor and school dentist with yearly check ups. |
|
|
The nurse
gives health education lectures and informal talks to the students e.g.
healthy eating, first aid courses etc.

The nurse
is also in charge of ordering and selling school uniform. This is a hectic
job but is an asset as it means that she meets all the students and parents
before they start at the school. This helps with the setting up of a
relationship. |

The nurse
is a friendly face for the children to come to when they have lost an item of
school uniform! |
